So I was thinking about how best to make battles a bit more balanced or atleast easier to consider a challange, and I though of this: have the attack stat play into the game a little more. The way I thought of implimenting a few different stat checks, and I think that I wouldn't mind seeing which one is liked the most.
The first idea, which is also the simplest and the most likely to shorten high-level battles and lengthen low-level fights, would be to have the Attack stat play directly into the battle process. Your stat would be a percentage of the Move Strength, up to 100 percent. Past that, it's an added 10 percent for every 25 points you are above 100.
Example: a Pokemon with 50 base Attack would deal 50% of a 100 damage move's Strength, so 50 damage
A Pokemon with 100 base Attack would deal 100% of the 100 damage, so 100
A Pokemon with 150 base Attack would deal 120% damage of the move, so 120 damage
The second idea would be Attack vs Defence, in which you would take the Attack stat of your Pokemon and subtract it by the Defence stat of your opponent. If you have a positive number, you add that percent damage to your attack base up to a 60% bonus, while if the number is negative you take up to that much in a debuff down to 10% Attack power. If the number evens out, its 50% base power. That's a little tough to word, so let me demonstrate
Pokemon A attacks. It has a 70 in Base Attack, and it's attacking with a 100 Damage attack. Pokemon B is blocking, and has a 50 in Base Defence. The attack minus the defence is 20, so the attack would do 50% of 100 (50) plus an added 20%, so 70 damage
A attacks with 70, B blocks with 70. The two balance out, so the attack only does 50% of 100 (50).
A attacks with 50, B blocks with 70. The attack would do 50% of 100 (50) minus 20% of 100 (20), so 30 damage
A attacks with 100, B blocks with 30. The attack would do 50% of 100, along with the maximum buff of 60%, so 110 damage total
A attacks with 30, B blocks with 100. The attack would do 50% of 100, but takes the maximum debuff of 40%, so only 10 damage
Or we can do neither. The thing is, if we don't re-adjust for Attack strength, I have this growing fear that most low-level fights will end with 1-hit KOs using Tackle while battles with high-level Pokemon will go on forever and a day
